Youths Drown At Sausalito Tuesday Night

Two small pairs of shoes, two empty lunch baskets, and remnants of clothing on the banks of the Sausalito city reservoir were mute evidence of a tragedy which happened Tuesday night. What had begun in an “exploration” hike, ended with finding of two youths bodies in the dark waters of the reservoir. In the early hours of the day Bobby Connell, 8, and Billy Silverthorne, 10, had their mothers pack lunches for them and they wandered over the hills – the hike and their lives ending just before midnight.

Searching parties were dispatched when night settled and the two boys did not return. For hours parties roamed around the hills in search of the two adventurers. At dusk the search began, and it ended when the grappeling (sic) hooks of Deputy Coroner Harry Williams’ brought up the bodies of the lads hours later. The remains of their last swim, the boys having left their clothes and lunch baskets on the banks were discovered by the searchers and spurred the men on to call Williams to drag the pond.

Grief stricken and frantic parents looked for hours while the men lowered their hooks time and time again to discover the bodies of their youthful sons.

The bodies were brought here, and the funeral arrangements are now being made. The rites will be held at the funeral parlors of Keaton & Dusel here.

Billy was the son of Mike Silverthorne, Lower Santa Rosa Road. Bobby was the son of A. A. Connell of Pine Street.
