RICHARD H. NELSON

Richard H. Nelson, a longtime Marin resident and air conditioning firm executive, died Sunday at his home in Belvedere after a long illness.

Mr. Nelson, 81, was born in Moline, Ill., and came to California in 1952. He lived in San Rafael before moving to Belvedere 18 years ago.

Before his retirement in 1959, he was president and chairman of the board of the Herman Nelson Corp., an air conditioning and ventilating firm in Moline.

He was responsible for large military contracts during World War II, supplying heaters and coolers for airplanes and tanks that were used throughout the world. His company earned the Army-Navy “E” award, recognition the government gave firms that contributed highly to war effort.

Nelson was a life member of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers and belonged to the San Francisco Yacht Club in Belvedere.

He graduated from the University of Illinois, where he was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity.

Surviving are his wife, Georgia; two daughters, Polly Hippler of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Gay Fahrner of Larkspur; a stepdaughter, Diana Martin of Sonoma; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society in San Rafael.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Society of American, 15300 Ventura Blvd., Suite 315, Sherman Oaks, Ca., 91403, or Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael.
