JAMES P. McPHERSON
A private memorial service has been held for James P. McPherson, a songwriter and musician who had lived and performed in Marin County for many years.
Mr. McPherson died Monday at Marin General Hospital after a long illness. He was 40 years old.
He was born and reared in Chicago and came to California in 1963 to attend San Jose State University, where he earned a degree in journalism and music.
About six years later, he moved to Marin and had lived in Fairfax, Novato and San Rafael, before moving to Mill Valley in 1979.
He performed with various blues and rock ‘n’ roll bands in San Jose and Marin. One of the bands was called High Noon, with which he recorded an album starring folksinger Joan Baez.
He was co-author of “Jane,” a hit song recorded by the rock group, The Starship.
Survivors are his wife, Evy; his mother, Carmina McPherson of Lombard, Ill.; and two sisters, Bonnie DePaul of Chicago and Susan Kostik of Louisville, Ky.
The family prefers memorial donations to the Self Realization Fellowship, 3880 San Rafael Ave., Los Angeles, 90065.
