ROBERT F. BEST
A Mass of Christian Burial for Robert F. Best, a jazz musician and longtime San Rafael resident, was to be celebrated this morning at Mission San Rafael Arcangel. Mr. Best died Friday at Marin General Hospital after a long illness. He was 78.
He was born and raised in San Francisco and moved to San Rafael in 1968.
He worked for 40 years as a water district auditor in San Francisco. He retired in 1970.
Music was a big part of his life. He played the bass violin and sang with various small orchestras and combos. In addition to events in San Francisco, he performed at the Del Monte Lodge in Carmel and Meadow Club in Napa.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine V. Best, and two brothers, Charles Best of San Anselmo and Frank Best of San Francisco. He was an uncle of the late Superior Court Judge Charles Best.
At his request, a jazz band was to play at this funeral. Inurnment was to be private.
