DR. HERBERT D. EDGER
Dr. Herbert D. Edger, a retired colonel in the Army Medical Corps, died Friday at his home in Tiburon. He was 73.
Dr. Edger was a native of Berkeley and a fourth-generation Californian.
He was raised in San Francisco and attended local schools.
Dr. Edger was a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania medical school and received a master’s degree in hospital administration from Baylor University in Texas.
He began his Army career in 1938 and retired in 1971 from the Presidio of San Francisco.
Dr. Edger served as the executive officer of the 103rd evacuation hospital in Europe during World War II. His post-war service included command of hospitals in Italy, Korea, France, West Germany and the United States.
He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal and the Legion of Merit.
Dr. Edger was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Sons in Retirement and various environmental and cultural groups.
His survivors include his wife, Elva Edger of Tiburon; a daughter, Nancy Benning; a son, Keith Edger; a sister, Janice Eberhard; and a brother, Robert Edger.
Private burial will be at the San Francisco National Cemetery in the Presidio.
The family prefers memorial gifts to Hospice of Marin or the Nature Conservancy.
