Rev. Tod Ewald, wife found dead

The Rev. Tod W. Ewald, retired Episcopal priest and longtime Corte Madera resident, and his wife of many years, Mary, were found dead Monday evening in the garage of their home.

The coroner’s office said they apparently took their own lives. The motor of their car had been left running in the closed garage.

They were found after neighbors out for a walk noticed fumes coming from the garage and called police.

The couple, who were known for their devotion to each other, apparently had become despondent over her illness. Mrs. Ewald was 75 and he was 73.

Ewald retired in 1977 after 31 years as first vicar and later rector of Holy Innocents’ Church in Corte Madera.

He had served all his active ministry in the parish, where he had come while still a student at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley.

He and his wife were reared in Michigan. After service in the Navy during World War II, Ewald decided to go into the ministry.

During his long tenure at Holy Innocents’, Ewald became known in much wider circles as a leader in the charismatic movement. He had served as president of the Episcopal Charismatic Fellowship and was know for combining the Anglican “high church” tradition with evangelism.

The couple had continued to live in Corte Madera after retirement.

Funeral arrangements were pending at Daphne Funerals-Marin in Corte Madera.
