Appendicitis Attack Is Fatal to Charles Yates, Prison Guard

Charles M. Yates, guard at San Quentin for eight years, was stricken last Friday with an acute attack of appendicitis. Taken to the prison hospital immediately, prison surgeons operated, but the patient failed to respond, and passed away.

He was 50 years of age, and has a wife, Ruth Yates; two daughters, Pearl and Theodora, and a stepson, Lloyd B. Whitney, the latter of San Anselmo.

Surviving him also are two brothers, Game Warden R. J. Yates of San Rafael; and Thos. Yates, San Francisco; five sisters, Mrs. Rena Seeman, Santa Rosa; Mrs. Pearl McGarvey, Oakland; Mrs. Rowena Burkhardt, San Francisco; Mrs. Anita Webb, San Francisco; Mrs. Jane Barbier, San Francisco.

Mr. Yates was a native of Ukiah, Mendocino county. Prior to becoming a guard at the prison, he operated a service station in San Rafael. He was a member of Marin Lodge No. 191, F. and A.M., and belonged to the California State Employee’ Assn., San Quentin Chapter.

Funeral service was held Saturday afternoon at the chapel of Keaton and Dusel. San Quentin guards and members of the Masonic order acted as pall bearers. Interment was private.
