James McGarghan, Town Character, Dead

Sheriff Keating is quite positive that the body of the suicide found last week in the Petaluma Creek is that of James McGarghan, who for many years has been a well-known character in and about San Rafael. When recovered from the water, after about six days, the body was found to have been weighted down with heavy stones, showing the intent of the deceased to effectually make away with himself. The pictures sent here of the remains tally with those in the possession of the Sheriff’s office. This fact together with the information that McGarghan was seen in Petaluma a short time before the suicide took place, and the fact that McGarghan has not been seen since, is proof that he is the man.

McGarghan was a good workman and for years has worked on ranches in Marin county but an uncontrollable mania for liquor brought him to his tragic end. He was about 65 years of age, and as far as is known leaves no relatives.
