Last Rites Said Over H. Schluter
Resident of San Rafael for 25 Years Given Masonic Funeral

The impressive funeral rites of the Masonic order were said yesterday over the remains of Henry A. Schluter, who passed away last Sunday at the Cottage Hospital following an operation to relieve an affliction from which he had suffered for many months.

Mr. Schluter was one among San Rafael’s most respected citizens. He came to this city twenty five years ago to assume charge of the Hotel Rafael property as landscape gardener. Under his direction the grounds became one of the most beautiful spots in the county. For many years since he severed his connection with that estate he had conducted a nursery in Laurel Dells, where he made his home.

The deceased had been affiliated with the Masonic lodge for many years and his death, notwithstanding his advanced age, seventy-two years, leaves a void in the membership roll which will be sorrowfully appreciated by every member of the local lodge.

Mr. Schulter’s early life was spent amid the pomp of royalty in Russia, where for several years following the Franco-Prussian war, he held the position of head gardener for a Russian Grand Duke, the uncle of the late Czar Alexander. Prior to that he served through the great struggle between the French and the Prussians as a sharpshooter in the army of his country, Germany.

Upon coming to this country and the Pacific coast twenty eight years ago he entered the employ of D. O. Mills at Menlo Park, assuming charge of the laying out of the beautiful country grounds of his employer. After two or three years there he came to San Rafael.

Mr. Schluter had no close relatives and was unmarried. He leaves a comfortable estate, valued approximately at $10,000, which, by a will, he bequeaths to a German church in the town of his birth, Sillium, Germany.

The funeral conducted at Masonic Hall under the auspices of Marin Lodge No. 191, F. and A. M., was largely attended. The arrangements for the obsequies were made by Dr. F. E. Sawyer, who removed the remains to Mt. Olivet cemetery, San Mateo, for cremation.
