Father of A. M. Newhall Dies In San Francisco
Edwin W. Newhall, a pioneer merchant of San Francisco and a prominent philanthropist, was buried last Saturday from the Newhall home on Pacific avenue following his death Oct. 29th from a lingering illness.
Mr. Newhall was but 59 years of age at the time of his death, and, but for his illness would have been actively engaged in the management of his several extensive business interests. He was the father of Almer M. Newhall of San Rafael, Mrs. Frederick Wood and E. W. Newhall, Jr., of San Francisco. He is also survived by his widow and two brothers, W. Mayo Newhall and George A. Newhall.
The deceased was prominently associated with the firm organized by his father in 1852, was president of the Newhall Land and Title company and the White Investment company.
His philanthropic spirit found an outlet in his activity with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, of which for years he was president, and the Lick Old Ladies’ Home, in which he held a similar position.
The funeral services, held at the home, were quiet but impressive, only the family and immediate friends attending. The honorary pallbearers included the dead philanthropist’s closest friends and business associates. They were as follows:
Judge W. W. Morrow, Frank B. Anderson, A. W. Foster, E. Scott, Edgar F. Wilson, Evan C. Williams, J. K. Wilson and Spencer C. Buckbee.
