DOROTHY VAN NUYS CHARLES DIES AT 60

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael for Dorothy Van Nuys Charles of San Rafael, owner of a San Rafael modeling school.

Mrs. Charles, who was 60, died unexpectedly Tuesday at Ross General Hospital.

She was a native of Hawaii and a graduate of the University of Hawaii.

Mrs. Charles had lived in Marin County for 30 years.

She was the owner of Dorothy Van Nuys School of Modeling in San Rafael.

Before opening the school in 1980, Mrs. Charles was the director of the Grimme School of Fashion Modeling in San Francisco.

During her career as a model, her pictures appeared in Vogue, Cosmopolitan and numerous other fashion magazines in the late 1940s. She also was the “Camel Girl of the Year” in the cigarette firm’s advertisements.

She also had been a movie actress. Included in her credits were the roles in “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo,” “Tarzan and the Amazons,” and “The Ziegfield Follies.”

Mrs. Charles purchased the franchise for the Miss Marin contest in 1983 and had directed the pageant since then.

She was a member of the Professional Models Association.

Her survivors include a son, Jason Charles of San Rafael; a daughter, Cynthis Smock of Rohnert Park; and one grandson.
