J. CLYDE STROUSS
A Mass of Christian Burial for J. Clyde Strouss of San Geronimo, president of Fairfax lumber and life-long Marin resident, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Rita’s Church in Fairfax.
Mr. Strouss, 58, died Saturday at his home.
Mr. Strouss, a native of Marin, attended the College of Marin and the University of San Francisco. During World War II, he served in the Navy Air Corps.
His career in the lumber business began in 1951 with Burris Lumber Co. in Mill Valley where he worked as a millwork and lumber estimator. In 1957, he moved to Fairfax Lumber Co. as millwork manager and worked his way up to manager.
He headed a group that bought Fairfax Lumber in 1971 and four years later he bought Gallagher’s Hardware and Lumber Co. in San Rafael. Gallagher’s was renamed San Rafael Home Improvement Center.
Mr. Strouss was a member of the Ross Valley Rotary Club, Marin County Chamber of Commerce, Marin County Republican Central Committee, Independent Order of Foresters, National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association and Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California.
Survivors are his wife, Iva Strouss of San Geronimo; his mother, Rose Strouss of Mill Valley; two daughters, Gwendolynn Lee of Fairfax and Cynthia Jilani of Lahore, Pakistan; a brother, Harold Strouss of San Rafael; and three grandchildren.
The rosary will be recited at 8 tonight at Chapel of the Hills mortuary in San Anselmo. Friends may call at the mortuary after 3 p.m. today. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in San Rafael.
The family prefers contributions to the American Cancer Society.
