Jackson Witherspoon of Inverness died Saturday. Arrangements were pending at the Mount Tamalpais Mortuary in San Rafael.

JACKSON WITHERSPOON
A private memorial service was held Sunday at St. Columba’s Church in Inverness for Jackson Thornwell Witherspoon III of Palo Alto.
Mr. Witherspoon, 51, died Saturday at his family’s summer home in Inverness after a long illness.
He was a native of New Orleans and attended St. Marks School in Southboro, Mass. Mr. Witherspoon was a 1955 graduate of Princeton University and pursued graduate studies in mathematics at Stanford University.
He served as a helicopter pilot in the Air Force, retiring as a captain.
Mr. Witherspoon has lived in Palo Alto since 1948.
Also a satellite communications engineer, he had worked since 1974 for Stanford Telecommunications Inc. of Santa Clara as vice president for engineering and a member of its board of directors.
Prior to that, Mr. Witherspoon worked for Ford Aerospace.
He was an avid sailor, serving as vice commodore and a director of the Inverness Yacht Club.
Mr. Witherspoon is survived by his wife, Anne R. Witherspoon of Palo Alto; two sons, Stanley Witherspoon of Roseville, Placer County, and Andrew Witherspoon of Palo Alto; a daughter, Virginia Witherspoon of Sausalito; and his mother, Mrs. J. Thornwell Witherspoon of New Orleans.
The family plans to hold a memorial service later on the Peninsula.
