EVERETT K. “BUCK” BALES
Everett K. “Buck” Bales of Red Mountain, Kern County, died Friday at the home of his daughter, Minette Bales Guralas of Larkspur, after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Bales was 73.
He was born in Everett, Wash., but moved with his family to the Mojave Desert, where at age 7, he began trapping coyotes for bounty to help support the family.
The family homesteaded the Gray Diamondback Mines in that area.
One of 12 children, Mr. Bales and six brothers later followed their father’s painting trade in the Los Angeles area.
But his love for the desert prompted his return there, and he remained in the Mojave most of his life.
Besides his daughter in Marin, Mr. Bales is survived by a son, Tom Bales of Petaluma; a sister, Effie Staples of Las Vegas; four brothers, Emery, Bill, Danny and Kern Bales, all of Southern California; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez, and a son, James “Ringo Angel” Bales.
Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society of San Rafael. Inurnment will take place Friday at Woodlawn Mausoleum in Santa Monica. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family prefers memorial donations to Hospice of Marin.
