Death of Noted Marin Woman
Mrs. Lovell White, one of California’s most distinguished women, is dead. And with her death passes one whose activities ranged through a great list of sociological improvement projects, and the results due to her unremitting labor and interest have endeared her memory to women and children all over the state.
The people of Marin county feel a personal bereavement in the death of this good woman, as for many years, during the summers, she spent much of her time in Mill Valley at the home of her son, Ralston White. She was the guiding spirit of the branch of the Out Door Art League in Mill Valley, as well as the chairman of the principal committee of the same organization in San Francisco.
She was the founder of the noted California Club in San Francisco and its president for four years. She has done much to ameliorate the conditions of working girls and women in California, and has also been active in the maintenance of a juvenile court in San Francisco.
Mrs. White has attained the age of seventy years, and until she was stricken by cerebral hemorrhage on September 12 in the midst of her duties at the Exposition, was active in many arduous and self-imposed tasks.
As Miss Laura Lyon, she was a society belle in Des Moines, Iowa. She established her right to be called a leader when in that state she led a general campaign to secure the state capital for her home city. It was in Des Moines that Miss Lyon met and was married to Lovell White. The young couple came to California and her husband engaged in the banking business with W. C. Ralston. Mr. and Mrs. White traveled extensively. While staying in Honolulu Mrs. White became the personal friend of Princess Lilleokalani.
Death came Tuesday at her late residence on Sacramento street. Her son, Ralston White, and her sister, Mrs. Margaret Whitcomb, were at the bedside when the end came. She had been unconscious for two days and passed blissfully into her final sleep.
The funeral services will be held today at 2 o’clock at the First Unitarian Church in San Francisco.
