LILLIAN J. ROTH

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alameda for Lillian J. Roth, a former longtime Mill Valley resident and teacher at Tamalpais High School.

Miss Roth, who was 78, died unexpectedly Wednesday at a convalescent hospital in Alameda.

She was born in Alameda and had lived in Mill Valley from 1929 to 1972, while she taught German and was a counselor at the high school.

She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, completing her degree in three years and earning membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Throughout her teaching career, she continued her education, doing graduate work at Mills College, University of San Francisco, University of the Pacific, University of Washington, Middlebury College in Vermont and Stanford University.

Miss Sanborn (sic) liked to spend time in the outdoors, especially in the high country of Yosemite National Park. One summer she toured Germany by bicycle. She also enjoyed skiing, swimming and playing tennis.

When she retired from Tamalpais High, she set up an annual scholarship fund for language students.

She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Rivers of Alameda.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the Lillian Roth Scholarship Fund, Tamalpais High School, to the attention of Clyde Krusinski, Miller Avenue and Camino Alto, Mill Valley, 94941.
