DARBY ELSEN
A memorial service for Darby “Elizabeth” Elsen of San Rafael will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in San Rafael.
Mrs. Elsen, 87, died Saturday at her home.
After retiring as director of a center for the mentally retarded in Minneapolis, Mrs. Elsen moved to Marin County in 1967.
For 18 years, she was a volunteer at the Bargain Box, the thrift shop operated for the benefit of Sunny Hills.
She served as a proxy grandmother to many children in Marin County. For the past eight years, she had taken care of youngsters in her home.
She taught weaving to handicapped people at the Cedars Development Center in San Rafael for many years.
She also was a member of the Tamalpais Weavers Guild and the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael.
She is survived by a son, Paul Elsen of Minneapolis; a daughter, Lorna Hammergren of Minneapolis; a sister, Imilda Witte of San Rafael; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The family prefers memorial contributions to the Marin County Heart Association.
