Man Killed When Boy Throws Gun On Car Steps

Edward Hillyer, a parcels post deliveryman of San Francisco, died Monday morning at the Cottage Hospital as a result of gunshot wounds received Sunday night when a shotgun which had been thrown onto a car platform by Charles Smith, a 15 year old boy, discharged a load of shot into his abdomen.

Hillyer had boarded a train at Reclamation. Young Smith, who lives at the Filbert Apartments, San Francisco, and who had been hunting, started to board the train at the next station. Hampered by the gun, he threw the weapon to the platform, with the fatal result.

Hillyer was taken immediately to the Cottage Hospital and operated on by Dr. W. J. Stone and Dr. Jones. He grew steadily weaker after the operation until 6 o’clock in the morning, when he died.

Young Smith was stopped at Sausalito on orders of Sheriff Keating by Constable Cramer and the young man was questioned closely by Probation Officer Thos. O’Connor before being released.

Coroner Phillips, of Sonoma county, where the fatal wound was inflicted, sent for the remains after the body had been taken in charge by Coroner Sawyer.
