CLARICE M. BALL
Clarice M. Ball, longtime Marin resident and retired language teacher, died Sunday at her home on Palm Avenue in Kentfield.
Born Suzanne Clarice Jeanmonod in Switzerland in 1908, she was brought to California as a child and grew up in Amador County.
Mrs. Ball was graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1929 with highest honors and received her master’s degree there in 1930.
She and George H. Ball met in university classes and were married in 1932. At that time, Mrs. Ball was teaching at the College of Marin, then called Marin Junior College. The couple settled in Kentfield.
After Mr. Ball earned a doctorate in 1938, he replaced his wife on the college teaching staff. However, she was called back during World War II, and until 1965, when she retired, Mrs. Ball taught French, Spanish and German.
She and her husband were co-authors of two highly successful French grammar texts.
Mrs. Ball was a charter member of the American Association of University Women and she had served as treasurer and bulletin chairman. She also was active in the Marin Conservation League, where she served as chairman of the mailing crew.
She enjoyed traveling, skiing and hiking in the mountains.
The Balls’ son, George Douglas Ball, was killed in a bicycle accident when he was 8 years old.
In addition to her husband of 53 years, Mrs. Ball is survived by a sister, Mrs. Alfred W. Leckie.
No funeral is planned.
