WILLIAM GAVRE
William Gavre, a longtime San Anselmo resident, died Monday at his home in Garden Valley, El Dorado County, after a long illness. He was 67.
Mr. Gavre was born and reared in San Francisco. After finishing high school, he joined the Sailors Union of the Pacific in 1935 and sailed as a seaman during World War II.
After the war, he worked on the Golden Gate Bridge for 32 years, first as a painter and later as a paint safety inspector. He lived in San Anselmo for 30 years, raising four children there.
Mr. Gavre had many interests – stamp collecting, camping, fishing, lapidary and gardening. He also was an avid reader, especially enjoying politics and history.
After he retired in 1979 from the Golden Gate Bridge, he moved to Garden Valley. He was a retired member of the San Francisco Painters Union Local 4 and the Sailors Union of the Pacific.
Mr. Gavre is survived by his wife of 44 years, Tania; one son, Mark Gavre of Salt Lake City; two daughters, Yvonne Gavre of San Francisco and Laura Runkala of Massachusetts; a brother, Ben Gavre of San Francisco; two sisters, Olga Frankoni of Millbrae and Vicky Simons of Newbury Park, Ventura County; and two grandchildren.
Another son, John, died in 1976.
At Mr. Gavre’s request, there will be no service. There will be a private family burial.
The family prefers memorial donations to Snowline Hospice of Placerville, the Cancer Research Society or Visiting Nurses of Placerville.
