SAMUEL C. KLOPSTOCK Jr.

Samuel Curtis Klopstock Jr., a longtime Marin resident, former businessman and onetime Stanford University track star, died Monday at Ross General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was 71.

Mr. Klopstock was born in San Francisco and reared in San Rafael. Earlier, he also had lived in Novato, Ross and Sausalito before moving back to San Rafael recently.

He attended the old Tamalpais School for Boys in San Rafael before going to Stanford, where he graduated in 1936.

While at the university, he was captain of the track team and was a national champion hurdler. He and his fellow team members, nicknamed “The Avengers,” walked away with several nation-wide meets.

Mr. Klopstock was a member of Stanford’s Hall of Fame.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in economics, Mr. Klopstock went to work at the San Francisco furniture store founded by his father at the turn of the century.

In 1949, the business was closed and Mr. Klopstock went into business for himself, opening a retail furniture store in Novato which he operated for many years.

Mr. Klopstock’s first wife, Helen, died earlier.

He is survived by his second wife, Ruth Klopstock; three sons, Samuel C. Klopstock III of Moraga, Henry W. Klopstock of Stockton and James H. Klopstock of Fairfield; one daughter, Helen C. Middleton of Glendale; a stepson, Stephen Carter of Santa Rosa; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society. No funeral is planned.

The family prefers memorial donations to the Stanford University Library Memorial Book fund. Contributions should be sent in care of Jean Coblentz, Stanford University, 301 Encina, Stanford, 94305.
