Marin Mourns Passing of a Beloved Citizen

Seventy-five years of gracious living was brought to an abrupt close for Jacob Albert Tuesday morning when he died from a heart attack at his San Rafael home.

Mr. Albert had recently moved to the Alexander Hamilton Apartments in San Francisco. He spent Monday night here due to a late meeting of the San Rafael City Council, of which he had been a member since 1937.

Tuesday morning about 9:30, he telephoned a daughter, Mrs. Charles Marcus, complaining of not feeling well. Mrs. Marcus (…illegible…) him at once and within a short time he succumbed.

Since 1892, when he started a “department store in a suitcase”, selling wares from door to door, Mr. Albert had risen to the heights of success as a merchant. The three outstanding stores in Marin County were established by him. They are located in San Rafael, San Anselmo and Mill Valley. The corporation also has stores in Napa and Richmond.

Well known for his philanthropies, Mr. Albert has contributed generously to community and civic needs as well as to the assistance of countless individuals throughout the years.

His only son, Harry, has been in direct charge of the San Rafael store for some time. Charles Marcus operates the department for men here.

Besides Mrs. Marcus, Mr. Albert leaves a daughter, Mrs. Harry Grossman, whose husband operates the Napa store.

Funeral services are being held this afternoon from Keaton’s Mortuary. Interment will be in Salem Cemetery in Colma.

Members of B’Nai Brith and the Elk’s Lodge held special services in accordance with a special request of Mr. Albert.

Pall bearers included Charles Harper, Harry Mindle, Abe Blumenfeld, Maurice Phillips, Jack Greenfield, Raymond Shone, Rube Brown and Jacob Schiff, all members of B’Nai B’rith.
