GEORGE LUDY

Former Marin County Supervisor George H. Ludy, a longtime West Marin resident, died Tuesday evening at his home in Inverness at the age of 80.

Mr. Ludy served on the Board of Supervisors from 1960 to 1964.

He was born in Petaluma, but came to Marin with his family at the age of one. He lived most of his life in Inverness and attended local schools.

He went on to Lowell High School in San Francisco and spent three years at the University of Santa Clara, where he played football and baseball.

He left college to go to sea, working as a seaman aboard a grain-carrying barque. Later he served as a junior officer aboard oil tankers and as a boatswain aboard a Coast Guard Cutter during a voyage to rescue explorer Raoul Amundsen in Antarctica.

Mr. Ludy returned to Inverness and operated the Rite Price Market there for 28 years.

He sold the market in 1961 after winning election to the Board of Supervisors.

Mr. Ludy also served five years as a county planning commissioner and was chairman of the Inverness School District Board for 12 years. He had been president of the Inverness Improvement Club, chairman of the Inverness Public Utilities District and a member of the West Marin Lions Club.

During his tenure on the Board of Supervisors, he opposed construction of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Civic Center and voted to abolish the office of county administrator.

Mr. Ludy was defeated by Thomas Storer in his bid for a second term in 1964.

He then served on the Marin County Retirement Board for many years and also for a time on the Golden Gate Bridge District Board.

In later years, Mr. Ludy operated a real estate office in Inverness.

Mr. Ludy’s survivors include his wife of 54 years, Florence.

Funeral arrangements were pending today at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael.
