R. H. Menzies Services Tomorrow

Funeral for Robert H. Menzies, 88, one of the donors of land for the San Rafael Public Library and president and chairman of the board of Parrott and Co., will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, San Rafael.

He died Saturday in a local hospital after a long illness.

A prominent San Francisco businessman, Menzies also was widely known for his interest in horticulture and botany, and his home “Oldcot” in San Rafael was often visited by gardeners and botanists from all over the world.

His business career began 72 years ago when he was an office boy for Parrott and Co., on e of the West’s oldest food and liquor import firms.

An amateur explorer, he knew all the trails of Mount Tamalpais and neighboring countryside. In 1937, he and his late wife accompanied the Louise A. Boyd arctic expedition to Northern Greenland, where he collected numerous herbarium specimens which he gave to the California Academy of Sciences.

Menzies was a member of the San Rafael Library Board from 1914 to 1960 and its president from 1925 to 1960.

He was a member of the California Horticultural Society, The Strybing Arboretum Society, the Royal Horticultural Society, the Alpine Garden Society, and the Scottish Rock Garden Society.

Surviving are two sons, John M. of San Francisco and Robert A. L. of Kentfield; a daughter, Mrs. Alan Galloway of San Francisco; two brothers, Kenneth of Bolinas and Colin of Mill Valley; a sister, Agnes of San Francisco; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Contributions to Strybing Arboretum, Golden Gate Park, and to the Save the Redwoods League are preferred by the family.
