He was born July 4, 1914, in Belvedere, and graduated in 1931 from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley.
His childhood and connection to Marin were important to him, according to his daughter, Kathleen Rende of Greenbrae.
The family owned a ranch in the San Geronimo Valley and a ranch in Mendocino County.
“He loved history and loved being such a pioneer of the San Geronimo Valley,” she said. “He talked endlessly about it.”
Mr. Mailliard was a pioneer in raising Merino sheep.
He first worked as a clerk with Walton N. Moore. He later worked as a salesman for Mailliard & Schmiedell Co., a family food brokerage business, and moved up the ladder at the company from department manager to sales manager, division manager, director, vice president to president, chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
He served as chairman of the board of Bromar Inc., a food brokerage firm succeeding Mailliard and Schmiedell, and after retirement served on the executive committee of the board.
Mr. Mailliard, an Army veteran, served as a director on numerous boards, including the Wells Fargo Bank of San Francisco, Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Los Angeles, San Francisco Airport Improvement Corp., Grand National Foundation, San Francisco Chapter of the National Council on Alcoholism, American Cancer Society and San Francisco Grocery Express Co.
He was a trustee with the Katharine Branson School, St. Francis Memorial Hospital and Grace Cathedral.
He also was a; director for American Molasses Co. of California, Nulomoline Co. of California, San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, Cow Palace Agricultural District, the S.O.S. Co. of Chicago, California Pacific Title Insurance Co., Bay Area Educational Television, March of Dimes, American Horse Show Assn., California Academy of Sciences, Coro Foundation and Legal Aid Society.
He was a former commissioner with the San Francisco Police Department and a former president of the city’s Redevelopment Agency.
Mr. Mailliard belonged to the Pacific Union Club, San Francisco Commercial Club, Sonoma County Trail Blazers, Rancheros Visitadores and Frontier Boys.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Smith Mailliard of San Francisco; a brother, William Mailliard of Washington, D.C., former Marin congressman; two other daughters in addition to Kathleen Rende, Carolyn Hacker of San Rafael and Margot Rawlins of Palo Alto; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Ward Mailliard Jr., a former San Francisco commissioner, and a brother, James Mailliard, a former San Francisco supervisor and director of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District Board.
The family will hold private services on the Mailliard ranch.
Family members ask that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society or the Save the Redwoods League in San Francisco.
