CLIFFORD J. CHIARONI
Former Market Owner

Clifford J. Chiaroni, 49, longtime owner of the old Charlie’s Market in San Rafael, died yesterday after collapsing at his home. He had a history of heart problems, according to his physician.

Chiaroni was born and reared in Petaluma and graduated from Petaluma High School in 1942. He joined the Navy and served until the end of World War II.

After the war he went to work at Charlie’s Market at 1701 Fourth Street, which then was owned by his father, Albert Chiaroni. In 1963 the son took over the operation of the store, which long was a favorite gathering place for residents of the west end of San Rafael.

The neighborhood store, noted for its friendly and homey atmosphere, was unable to survive competition from large chain and discount stores and closed in 1972.

Since that time, Chiaroni had worked for United Markets in San Rafael.

Chiaroni was a member of Club Italia.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Evelyn, of the family home at 118 Hawthorne Way, San Rafael; three daughters, Geralyn Hampton, Bonnie Rimola and Cynthia Chiaroni, all of San Rafael; a son, Lawrence Chiaroni of San Rafael; his father, Albert Chiaroni of Sonoma; his mother, Mrs. Max Graham of Petaluma; a brother, Leland Chiaroni of Petaluma, and a sister, Susan Chiaroni of San Rafael.

The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Blessed Sacrament Church in Santa Venetia. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the church at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the Heart Fund or to a favorite charity.
