ALICE E. HOLLAND
Rites Set

Funeral services will be held Monday morning for Mrs. Alice E. Holland, 93, mother of Independent-Journal Society Editor Florence Donnelly.

A resident of Marin County since 1892, she died yesterday after a brief illness at her San Rafael home. She had lived at 117 C Street since 1907.

Services are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday at Harry M. Williams Mortuary in San Rafael. Interment will be private.

Mrs. Holland, widow of Frank Sargent Holland, Marin County recorder for several terms, was a member of a pioneer California family. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Joseph Conmy, came to California during the days of the Gold Rush. They were married in San Francisco in 1852 immediately after arrival from Australia and went immediately to Trinity County where they had a gold mine and owned the Trinity Journal. Mrs. Holland’s father had learned the printing trade in the office of the Philadelphia Public Ledger. Later he was employed in the office of the New York Tribune.

In 1859 Mrs. Holland’s father sold the Trinity Journal and went to Shasta where he bought the Shasta Courier. Mrs. Holland was born in Shasta. Conmy sold the Courier in 1869 and moved his family to San Jose where the children could have a better education. He bought t he San Jose Mercury, and under his management enlarged it from a weekly to a daily paper. He also was superintendent of schools, internal revenue inspector and member of the Common Council of San Jose for several terms. He retired from active work on the Mercury to operate a job printing establishment.

Mrs. Holland, who was educated in Notre Dame Convent, came to Marin County as a bride. She was the grandmother of the late James Holland Donnelly and leaves three great grandchildren, Eileen, Frank and Sheila Donnelly.
