MILTON H. ESBERG Jr.

Milton H. Esberg Jr., a San Francisco public relations executive and member of a family long identified with the financial and cultural life of the city, died yesterday at the age of 81.

He died at the San Francisco Convalescent Center after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Esberg’s father founded the San Francisco Opera Association and the San Francisco Community Chest, now the United Bay Area Crusade.

Mr. Esberg was secretary of the United San Francisco Republican finance committee from 1951 until his retirement in 1980, when he was elected secretary emeritus.

For many years, he served as fund-raising consultant to the San Francisco Opera Association. He was a former director of the de Young Museum Society, the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation, Guide Dogs for the Blind and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.

He also served on the San Francisco Symphony’s Board of Governors and was an early president of the city’s Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Born in San Francisco in 1903, Mr. Esberg was educated at San Francisco’s Potter School, the predecessor of Town School. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1924.

After graduation, he worked in San Francisco for the Mercantile Trust Co. as a securities analyst and later joined the General Cigar Co. He became a director of General Cigar.

Mr. Esberg served in the Air Force from 1942 to 1945, attaining the rank of major. In 1946, he founded Consultants Inc., a San Francisco-based public relations firm, and served as its president until his death.

He was also a fund-raiser for several Bay Area private schools, including San Dominico in San Anselmo, Katherine Branson in Ross, St. Ignatius in San Francisco and Athenian in Danville.

Mr. Esberg is survived by his wife, Prudence Talbot Esberg of San Francisco; three daughters, Prudence Graham of Kentfield, and Gail Anderson and Karen Gillbergh, both of San Francisco; a son, Milton Guy Esberg of San Anselmo; a brother, Ernest L. of Greenbrae; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Halsted-N. Gray-Carew and English, 1123 Sutter Street, San Francisco.

The family prefers contributions to the San Francisco Opera Association or a beneficiary of the donor’ choice.
