ALICE ALBERT MARCUS
Native daughter
Alice Albert Marcus died Jan. 1, 1993, in her sleep at the Tamalpais Retirement Home in Greenbrae, where she had lived since it opened in 1970. She was 94.
A native daughter, Mrs. Marcus was born in 1898 at Fourth and A streets in San Rafael. She often spoke of the early days of San Rafael and fondly remembered riding her pony, Peggy, who was tethered in a pasture where Citibank now stands.
She was the daughter of Jacob and Annie Albert, who owned Albert’s Department Store, which later became Macy’s. Mrs. Marcus’s family was one of the pioneer Jewish families and philanthropists of that time. Her father donated Albert Park to San Rafael as well as other buildings for public use.
As a young matron, Mrs. Marcus was active in the San Rafael Improvement Club, the Red Cross, and in gardening groups.
Married to the late Charles Marcus, she is survived by a son, Warren Marcus of Pinole, and three granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Keaton’s Mortuary. Interment will be at Hills of Eternity, Colma.
