VIRGIL MURPHY
Private funeral has been held for Virgil A. (Spud) Murphy of 215 Main Street, Sausalito, who died Thursday in a local convalescent hospital after a long illness.
Born in Black Diamond, Wash., Murphy had lived in Marin since 1957. He was 71. He and his wife, Cathleen, sold their home at Strawberry Point four years ago and moved to Sausalito.
A graduate of the University of Washington, he rowed on the University’s nationally ranked rowing teams, in his youth. For many years, he worked in construction in Alaska. His last employment was as a clerk at the Presidio of San Francisco.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Michael Murphy; a granddaughter and a sister, Maxine Shoblom, all of Seattle.
