Sister Mary Acquinas

Sister Mary Acquinas, 92, who taught at Mount Carmel School in Sausalito and other Catholic elementary and high schools in Northern California, died in her sleep yesterday in a San Francisco hospital.

Born in Newfoundland, Canada, she came to California with her family as a young girl. Joining the St. Gertrude’s Convent of Mercy in Rio Vista at age 16, she was professed into the order of Sisters of Mercy in 1901, relinquishing her given name, Hannah Wilson.

Sister Acquinas had lived in the order’s motherhouse in Burlingame since 1958, when she was left partially paralyzed by a series of strokes.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the motherhouse, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow, also at the motherhouse.
