DONALD C. NIVENS

A funeral for Donald C. Nivens of Sonoma, former editor of t he Ebb Tide in Tiburon, will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Bates, Evans and Fehrensen Funeral Home in Sonoma.

Mr. Nivens died Saturday at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital from injuries suffered in a traffic accident. He was 51.

He won national awards at San Quentin while editor of the San Quentin News and continued his journalistic career after his release. Mr. Nivens was known for his thoughtful editorials and was considered a “folk hero” in the Department of Corrections.

He had been editor of the Ebb Tide, a former weekly newspaper in Tiburon, and more recently was a free lance writer contributing essays to the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner and the Chicago Sun Times.

Mr. Nivens was born in Glasgow, Ky., and reared in Los Angeles. After graduation from Anaheim High School, he worked for the Anaheim Bulletin.

He moved to Sonoma two years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Nivens of Sonoma; his father, Haskell Nivens of Livingston, Tenn.; his mother, Louise Klemm of Suisun; and two sisters, Betty Lou Luker of Long Beach and Sharon Molin of Suisun.

Inurnment will be at Valley memorial Park in Novato.
