Rev. Father Peter Scanlon Succumbs

Rev. Father Peter Scanlon, formerly pastor of the Sacred Heart Church at Olema, and who had the St. Cecelia’s church in Lagunitas built, died Tuesday in St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco, following a prolonged illness.

Father Scanlon was in Marin during 1935 and during that year the Olema Church, which had included the territory from Woodacre to Pt. Reyes and Bolinas, was aided by the erection of the Lagunitas church.

The deceased was a native of Ireland and had been an ordained priest for twenty years. He was 45. He was confined to the hospital for a year and before that was at St. Aloysius Church in Palo Alto.

The body lay in state at St. Mary’s Cathedral, and tonight the clergy will chant the Office of the Dead. Last rites will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the Cathedral.
