ARTHUR FOFF

Arthur Foff of Mill Valley, a retired banker who also spent many years in the real estate business, died Tuesday at Ross General Hospital. He was 89.

Mr. Foff was the dean of the county’s show dog enthusiasts. He was a founding member of the Sir Francis Drake Kennel Club and had won dozens of ribbons for his prize dogs.

Mr. Foff first showed a dog when he was a teenager, winning a blue ribbon and best-in-show at the prestigious Golden Gate Kennel Club show.

He bred dogs, imported them wherever he found them. He operated the Tamalgate Kennels at his home.

Mr. Foff was a widower. His son, Arthur Raymon Foff, died in 1972.

The Neptune Society in San Francisco is handling arrangements.

A second obituary appeared in the Nov. 15 paper:

Arthur Foff, 89, of Mill Valley, internationally known dog breeder, died Tuesday at Ross General Hospital after three weeks of illness.

He was nicknamed “King of the Mountain” for being one of the original property owners on Mount Tamalpais. He bought property there when he was 18.

He was a life charter member of the California Collie Club and a life member of the Northern California Schnauzer Club. The Sir Francis Drake Kennel Club, of which he was a charter and life member, honored him by dedicating, honored him by dedicating their Sept. 18, 1983 show to him.

His survivors include four grandchildren, Erika Teahan of Mill Valley, Frieda Lawrence of Los Angeles, Hedda Travers of Greenbrae and Greta Foff of Mill Valley; and one great-grandchild.

The family prefers memorial donations to the Shriners’ Childrens’ Hospital in San Francisco or to the Marin Humane Society.

Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society of San Rafael.
