Boy Falls From Raft And Drowns
A tragedy that throws a pall of gloom over the household of Richard Howse, San Francisco merchant, occurred Tuesday afternoon when his little son, 10-year-old Richard, Jr., was drowned from a raft off El Campo.
For two days and nights the efforts of a searching party to locate the body of the boy have been futile.
With another boy, Ralph Canning, age 11, the Howse boy had shoved off from the beach on a frail raft. In some manner which the Canning boy, who later reached shore, is unable to explain, the craft overturned and his little companion disappeared.
The boys were encamped near the shore with the Howse boy’s uncle, Harold Hauer, a San Francisco fireman. The boy’s father and another uncle came over immediately and started the search.
Howse, senior, is a member of the hardware firm of Howse Brothers, on Valencia street. It is believed that the receding tide, which was high at the time of the accident, carried the little body out into the channel.
