Former Mayor Dies

A former mayor of San Rafael, Edward W. McCarthy, passed away at his home here on Mission street last Monday night after a long illness. Mr. McCarthy was a well known business man of San Francisco, being a member of the firm of McCarthy Brothers, tea and coffee merchants, a business he founded many years ago and which made him wealthy. Besides his residence in San Francisco he kept a beautiful summer home in San Rafael.

He always took an active interest in political matters and for several terms was elected mayor of San Rafael, an office he never sought but filled with ability. He leaves a widow, four sons, Edward, Clarence, Walter and Milton, who have been affiliated with him in the business, and three daughters, Evelyn Loretta and Anita.

Funeral services were held in San Francisco yesterday morning.
