ELMER R. TYNES
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in San Rafael for Elmer Ray Tynes, the first back-to-back winner of the Marin County Masters Bowling Tournament.
Mr. Tynes, of San Rafael, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 1987, in San Rafael. He was 54.
Known to his pals as “Big E,” Mr. Tynes began his love affair with bowling when he took a job as a pin setter in 1949 at the old Marin Bowl. He was the first vice president of the Marin County Bowling Association.
In 1968, he beat Dick Treadway in a showdown match in the finals of the Marin County Masters Bowling Tournament – as he had done the years before – to become the first man to win the event two years running.
He was a native of Truman, Ark., and a graduate of San Rafael High School.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ella Belle Tynes; his wife, Alberta Tynes; two daughters, Julia Tynes and Mrs. Pamela Robertson; a brother, Clyde Tynes; three sisters, Mrs. Eula Walker, Mrs. Thelma Alvernaz and Mrs. Adella Cantor. He is also survived by a granddaughter.
Burial will be in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery.
