ALFRED MERRILL FISHER
A memorial service for Alfred Merrill Fisher of San Rafael, a retired architect whose firm designed many Northern California schools, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Sacramento.
Mr. Fisher died of a heart attack Sunday, Aug. 16, 1987, at the Bayside Convalescent Hospital in Kentfield. He was 83.
Mr. Fisher was born in Spokane, Wash. He went to work in 1916 at his family’s planning mill in Stockton. His flair for shop drawings for specialized mill work and small house plans led him to move to Sacramento in 1939, where he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II.
After the war, he became a partner in the San Francisco architectural firm of Koblik & Fisher. The firm specialized in schools. Mr. Fisher suffered a stroke in 1957, but later returned to work on smaller architectural projects. He moved to Walnut Creek in 1979 and to Marin two years later.
Mr. Fisher was a member of the American Institute of Architects and a past master of the Masonic Lodge No. 40 in Sacramento. He was proud of having been the third young man in Stockton to become an Eagle Scout.
He is survived by a son, A. Robert Fisher of Belvedere, also an architect; an adopted daughter, Nancy Porter of Sacramento; a stepson, Don Mullen, also of Sacramento; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. His wife, Janet Fisher died in 1979.
His family has asked that memorial contributions go to the Sacramento chapter of the American Diabetes Association, 2031 Howe Ave., Suite 250, Sacramento, 95825.
