Mrs. Lena Burkhart, 96, Who Came West In Covered Wagon, Dies In S. R.
Mrs. Lena Burkhart, veteran of an Indian attack on a covered wagon train 96 years ago, died yesterday at the home of her daughter in San Rafael.
She was the widow of the late Charles A. Burkhart who operated an express and storage company on B street in San Rafael for many years.
Born in Ohio, she made the covered wagon trip west as an infant. After spending her girlhood in San Jose, she moved to Stockton. She had lived in San Rafael for 54 years.
She lived at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Zada Hackman, at 5 Bayview street. She would have been 97 on Sept. 19.
