John McPhillips Succumbs at 92
The death of John McPhillips last Friday at the home of his niece, Mrs. Mat Clark, Tomales, revealed at least two outstanding features in the life of a man who came from Ireland when he was 18. He was 92 years of age at his death and he had worked on but one ranch during his entire active life.
He owned an estate estimated at $50,000, which included a number of ranches, and investments in securities.
He had lived with his niece for several years when the infirmities of age took him from his regular ranch work, and from his chores.
The “green” Irishman went to work first in this country for Patrick Carroll, who owned large ranches in the Bloomfield area of Sonoma county. He remained with Carroll until the latter’s death some years ago.
He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews living mostly in California. He was buried last Monday at Tomales cemetery, following services at the Church of the Assumption there.
Surviving relatives are: Mrs. Matt (sic) Clark, niece; John and William McPhillips, nephews, Tomales; Joseph McPhillips, San Mateo, nephew; Tobias McPhillips, Stockton, nephew; Hugh McPhillips, Sonoma, nephew; Mrs. A. R. McCrohan, Richmond, niece; Miss Annie McPhillips, San Francisco, niece; Mrs. E. A. Donohue, San Anselmo, niece.
