A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Toss for Edgar T. Lindner of Tiburon, a prominent businessman and entrepreneur and longtime Marin resident.
Mr. Lindner, who was 75, died Tuesday at Bayside Convalescent Hospital in Greenbrae. He had suffered a stroke six weeks ago.
He was born and raised in San Francisco, a third-generation Californian. After graduating from Lowell High School, he attended and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley.
Mr. Lindner was a noted golfer. At the age of 13 he won the West Coast junior golf championship and at the university he was captain of the golf team. After graduation, he continued to be active in pro-am tournaments on the West Coast.
During World War II, Mr. Lindner served as a major in the Army Transportation Corps and was executive officer of the San Francisco Port of Embarcation.
In his business career, he founded several financial service companies in the Bay Area. For many years he represented New York Stock Exchange brokerage firms. He long was a champion of change in the way brokerage firms market their services and of the Securities and Exchange Commission in its efforts to protect the public.
He also was the author of “A Layman’s Guide to Investment Alternatives” and “Your Last Dollar and How To Keep It.”
In recent years, he was a financial consultant in San Francisco and overseas and also taught personal financial management at Golden Gate University.
Mr. Lindner had lived in Marin 42 years, first in Ross, then in Kent Woodlands and most recently, in Tiburon.
He had served on the Marian County Grand Jury. He was a member and past president of the Meadow Club in Fairfax and was a member of the Merchants Exchange Club in San Francisco.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Maude Rennie of Tiburon; two sons, Eric Lindner of San Rafael and E. Tod Lindner of Mill Valley; two daughters, Jane Lindner and M. Rennie Lindner, both of San Francisco; and three granddaughters.
The family prefers memorial contributions to the Marin Charitable Association, Box 759, Ross, or St. John’s Church.
