Pioneer Passes To Earned Rest

John Calvin Dickson, one of Marin county’s most substantial pioneer residents, passed away Tuesday night at his home in H street after an illness of but a few days. His end was unexpected, and the announcement of his death was received with sorrowful surprise by those who had become accustomed to see him daily about the streets.

Mr. Dickson had filled his long and useful life, nearly 80 years, with a record for good deeds, honesty and square dealing with all mankind that will live long in the memory of those with whom he had associated.

His intimate knowledge of the history of Marin county dates back to 1857-8, when he reached San Rafael from Ryegate, Vermont, his birthplace. Two years after he came to this county he leased a large dairy ranch, which he conducted for 10 years. During this time he was married to Miss Jane Caldwell, a native of his boyhood home in the East. He subsequently became a large property owner, being at the time of his death the possessor of extensive ranch interests in Olema and San Geronimo. Seven children were born to the couple, but death has removed three of them. Those who are left to mourn the passing of the father are the widow, Mrs. Jane Caldwell Dickson, three daughters, Mary Ella, Nettie Margaret and Helen Dickson Dewing, and one son, Robert Edwin.

Twelve years ago Mr. Dickson retired from active life and took up his home at 101 H street this city.

The funeral will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow at the residence, and the interment will be private in Mt. Tamalpais cemetery.

Last Ceremony For J. C. Dickson

John Calvin Dickson was taken to his last resting place Friday after a funeral ceremony held at his late residence in H street, where death occurred three days before. The relatives of the deceased, including his widow, son and daughters, and the family of William Dickson, a brother, were present at the funeral.

The arrangements were under the direction of Dr. F. E. Sawyer and the interment was made in Mt. Tamalpais cemetery.

Mr. Dickson was one of the pioneer ranchers of this county having come here from Vermont in 1858. Twelve years ago he retired from his active life with a considerable fortune in property interests at San Geronimo and Olema, and had since lived in this city.
