Strange Disease Kills Oriental

Toy Foot, a young Chinese held in the detention camp at Angel Island, died Tuesday of beri-beri, an Asiatic disease of which but little is known among western medical men. Coroner Sawyer was called to hold an inquest and determine the cause of death. Reference to authoritative treaties proved that the disease was peculiar to Orientals, particularly those who lived chiefly on rice. The heart is the principal organ affected.

The Chinese, 21 years old, was taken to Angel Island from the S. S. Manchuria in early September. While the investigation concerning his statement that he was under age was being made he developed the illness. The remains were turned over to a Chinese undertaker.
