Death of a Prominent Attorney

Mrs. W. F. Jones of our city has suffered another irreparable loss in the death of her brother, Allison B. Ware, leading attorney of Santa Rosa. Mr. Ware was also the brother of the late Charles P. Ware, for many years a resident of San Rafael. The end came to Attorney Ware at four o’clock last Thursday afternoon, following a painful illness of long duration borne with great fortitude until unconsciousness brought the longed-for release shortly before the Spirit took its flight. The most skilful surgeons and the tenderest nursing were employed in the effort to save the life of the man who had so impressed himself upon the life of Sonoma Valley where he had lived and successfully labored for many years. Born in New York in 1847 he came to California in 1868, and after two years was admitted to the bar. After a brief practice he became principal of the State Industrial School in San Francisco which he served for three and a half years.

In 1876 he resumed the practice of law which he followed up to the time of his last illness, with marked success.

Early in his career he became District Attorney of Sonoma county, which office he left to attend to the demands of the growing private practice, and of the position of honor and responsibility which the community laid upon him. He was ever prominent in educational, banking, and fraternal circles, being at one time the president of the Santa Rosa National Bank and at the time of his death, a director and vice-president of the Exchange Bank of Santa Rosa. He was a Past Master of his local lodge, F. & A. M., Past High Priest of Royal Arch Masons, Past Eminent Commander of Knights Templar and the first Exalted Ruler of the Santa Rosa lodge of B. P. O. E., receiving at the hands of the last named fraternity a good life membership card in appreciation of his services.

But these honors were incidental to his chief claim to distinction as an advocate and counselor at law.. Here his splendid gifts and sterling traits shone to best advantage and it was in this field that he attained his greatest success. Besides his widow he leaves a family of seven children, the eldest of who is President Allison B. Ware of the State Normal School at Chico.

By the death of Mr. Ware California loses a respected and highly esteemed citizen of marked ability, untiring energy and sterling worth.

Sonoma county lost one of its most distinguished citizens last Thursday in the death at his home in Santa Rosa of Allison B. Ware, a brother of Mrs. W. F. Jones of this city.

Mr. Ware’s active life was linked with the best interests of his home town and county for a great many years, and he had made an enviable reputation as a lawyer and as citizen, serving that county for two terms as District Attorney.

A part of his early life he spent as an educator and was an instructor of a school in the vicinity of Santa Rosa and later was principal of the State Industrial school in San Francisco, serving that county for two terms as District Attorney.

He was prominent in fraternal circles, having been chosen the first exalted ruler of t he Santa Rosa lodge of Elks. He was a member also of the Masonic lodge.

Death came to him after a comparatively brief illness, during which, with the aid of the best medical skill obtainable, every effort was made to prolong his life.

The funeral was held Saturday at the family residence, and the remains were taken to San Francisco for cremation.

Mr. Ware is survived by his wife and the following children: President Allison B. Ware, Jr., of the State Normal School of Chico; Attorney Phil Ware and Attorney Wallace Ware; Charles Ware and Miss Mabel Ware, of Santa Rosa; Mrs. A. R. Gallaway of Sacramento, and Mrs. Margaret Lyon of Texas.
