Death of A. P. Towne

E. B. Martinelli on Monday received a letter from Beverly, Massachusetts, announcing the death of Mr. Asa Prescott Towne, one of San Rafael’s pioneer citizens. He died on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Boxford, Mass., in the room in which he was born 75 years and three months before. He was buried in the family lot with his relatives. Mr. Towne was visited last June by his relative, Mr. Geo. A. Woodbury of Beverly, and returned to his old home in the east with him, and spent the last few months of his life with his relatives. He was one of Marin county’s oldest ranchers, was a man of sterling character and worth, highly respected. He came to California about fifty years ago, and for a time resided in Oakland. In June, 1860 he purchased 250 acres of land a few miles east of this city, from Archibald N. Drummond for $3000, and resided upon the ranch until about a year ago, when he disposed of his personal property and leased the ranch. He never married. By industry and economy he accumulated considerable property which he disposed of by will soon to be filed for probate by the executor, Mr. Woodbury. He was for years a subscriber to the Journal and his subscription is now paid for almost a year in advance. His death was a surprise to his many friends here.
