William A. McLean Dies At 75

William Alexander (Sandy) McLean, 75, longtime Belvedere resident and former chief of two fire departments, died yesterday in a San Francisco hospital after being stricken in his home.

McLean, of 144 Bayview Avenue, collapsed in his bedroom and was taken to Marin General Hospital, then transferred to Southern Pacific Memorial Hospital in San Francisco where he died.

Belvedere Community Hall’s flag was flown at half mast today in his memory.

Born in Los Angeles, McLean moved to Belvedere when he was a year old. He served as chief of the Belvedere Volunteer Fire Department and of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad’s Fire department at the Tiburon yard.

He began as a fireman on the railroad’s ferries in 1910, served two years, then went to sea. He returned to the railroad in 1917, staying until his retirement in 1958 (?). He served 37 years as fire chief.

McLean, a member of Belvedere’s volunteer department until his death, was chief 14 years, succeeding his late father, Dan. Northwestern Pacific required him to drop that job during World War II.

McLean and his wife, the former Mary Copeland, celebrated their golden wedding in 1964 (?) He was a 1906 graduate of Belvedere School, and attended San Francisco’s Mission High School, graduating in 1911.

Surviving, besides his wife, are three sons, Scott of Belvedere and Robert K. and William A. Jr. of Mill Valley; three daughters, Edith of San Rafael, Mrs. Madeleine Cotton of Shreveport, La., and Mrs. Shirley Danielson of Long Beach; a brother, Murdock McLean of San Diego, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Greenhood of San Rafael.

Pending an autopsy, funeral arrangements are incomplete.
