County Treasurer Fallon Died Sunday Night After Long Illness

Thomas J. Fallon, Marin county’s treasurer for 21 years, passed away early Monday morning at his home, thus closing the career of a man who for nearly two score years had been honored with the confidence and respect of every man, woman and child who knew him.

Notwithstanding the fact that he had been ill and suffering for more than a year, as the result of an affliction for which he underwent an operation some time ago, his death came as a surprise and a shock to everybody. A few days before the end of the report was given out that he was better, and the sad contradiction came with the news of his death.

There probably is not a person in Marin county who can with truth say aught that is derogatory of any act of Tom Fallon’s life. Associated intimately with the political conduct of the county’s affair, there has never been a suspicion of criticism breathed against him in a quarter of a century. No more crucial test of man could be devised. After all these years he was often referred to as “Honest” Tom Fallon.

The immediate cause of death was heart trouble. When the end came he was surrounded by the members of his family.

He was born in San Francisco June 24th, 1956 (sic), 59 years ago today. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Luke Fallon. When yet a boy he came to Tomales where his father entered the dairy business. He attended the public schools there and later enrolled as a student at St. Mary’s College. His first official position was as Deputy Assessor under Assessor William Vanderbilt in 1886. Two years later he was appointed Under-Sheriff by Sheriff Frank Healy and continued to serve in that office until he was elected treasurer and took office the 1st of January, 1894, to succeed R. Cottingham, whose term expired at that time. Since then his return to the position of trust has been as regular as the march of time.

Since 1902 he had been a member of the Benevolent Order of Elks, joining that fraternity in San Francisco. His other fraternal connections included membership of Tamalpais, N. S. G. W., San Rafael Aerie No. 256, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Mira Monte Camp, W. O. W., Genessee Tribe No. 207, I. O. R. M.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Minnie T. Fallon, and three sons, Joseph, Thomas and George Fallon, and was the brother of Mrs. Sarah Pierce, Mrs. N. Flynn, Lawrence and James Fallon.

The funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at the Masonic Hall under auspices of the Elks. The county officials attended in a body, and the large assembly hall of the building was filled with sorrowing friends who had know and admired Tom Fallon in his life time.

Judge John J. Van Nostrand, Exalted Ruler of San Francisco Lodge No. 3, B. P. O. E., presided at the ceremony held at Masonic Hall.
