Last Grandchild Of John Reed Dies
Miss May Hilarita Deffebach, last surviving grandchild of John Reed, whose vast ranch once embraced the Corte Madera del Presidio land grant covering South Marin, died last night.
Death came at a local hospital after a long illness. Miss Deffebach was 79.
She was born in the old Reed adobe in what is now the Locust district of Mill Valley, a daughter of Thomas B. and Inez Reed Deffebach. When she was 4 years old, her father died. Her mother’s death followed within a year, and she was taken and reared by her mother’s brother-in-law and sister, Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Lyford, whose century-old Strawberry home recently was acquired by the Marin Conservation League and Audubon Society.
For many years, “Auntie May,” as she was known to her family, had resided with a cousin, Cuthbert Sollom at 90 Locust avenue in Mill Valley.
She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Inez Mills of Mill Valley, and two nephews, Thomas Deffebach Jr. of Mill Valley and Oliver Sollom of Belvedere.
A requiem mass will be offered at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Mill Valley tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. following services at the Russell and Gooch chapels. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral chapel at 8 o’clock tonight.
