Pioneer Descendant John E. Lucas Dies

A member of one of Marin’s oldest families, John E. (Munzie) Lucas, died today in a local hospital after an extended illness. He was 93.

Lucas was the grand nephew of Don Timoteo Murphy, who came to Main in the 1830s as an administrator of affairs for the Indians, who had been dispersed from Mission San Raphael Arcangel. He received three land grants from the Mexican governor of California, Manuel Micheltorena, which were passed on to Lucas’ parents.

Their home was a large ranch north of San Rafael, 7,600 acres in extent. Today the acreage is known as the Freitas ranch.

Lucas attended Dixie School for a while, but received much of his schooling from governesses. Later he went to the South, where he was a plantation overseer.

A bachelor, he made his home at 160 Palm avenue, San Rafael, in recent years. He lived with his sister, Maria L. Lucas, and two nieces, Mrs. Ernest Langdale and Mrs. Charles Graves.

He is also survived by a nephew, Anthony G. Cadogan of Berkeley.

Requiem High Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Raphael’s Church. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Keaton mortuary chapel in San Rafael.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds that he was the son of the late John E. and Maria L. Lucas, and uncle of the late J. Lucas Cadogan.
