Wealthy Pioneer Passes Away

The funeral of John McGaghey, who died Tuesday morning at the age of 80 years and 7 months, will be held this morning at St. Raphael’s church.

The deceased had been a resident of San Rafael for nine years, having come here from Modoc and Plumas counties, where he had resided for nearly half a century, during which time he amassed a fortune of more than $100,000. Engaging in the cattle business in the early days, he extended his interests and holdings until he became possessed of a great many thousand acres. When he decided to retire he sold 17 large ranches at an average of $5 an acre. Subsequently the railroad have passed through that section and the land once sold for almost nothing is rated at many times the price received by McGahey.

Recently McGaghey presented to St. Raphael’s parish a church altar which it is estimated is valued at $25,000. Mrs. Mary Ann McGaghey, wife of the deceased, died in 1909. There are no near relatives.
